How It Began
The Legacy & Gratitude Fund didn't begin with a business plan. It began with a quiet moment with God, a Facebook video, and a man named Michael Hernandez.
Daniel Castillo, founder of G.A.L Building Group, came across a video of Michael — a man waiting nearly 10 years for a heart and kidney transplant. A medicine meant to cure his pneumonia had destroyed his kidneys completely. Dialysis was keeping him alive, but slowly wearing him down. He was terminal, on the transplant list, holding on in faith.
For a small construction company with limited resources, it wasn't a simple decision. But Daniel had been asking God in quiet time how he could do more — how a builder could serve beyond buildings. This was his answer. He picked up the phone, called Michael, and later sat in a parking lot and wrote a check — not knowing the amount until that moment, trusting God to guide his hand.
Michael looked at the check and said: “This is exactly what I've been asking God to help me with. This is exactly the amount.”
That moment changed Daniel. And from it was born an annual commitment — the Legacy & Gratitude Fund — a promise to keep stepping forward in obedience, every year, for people in need.
The Legacy & Gratitude Fund carries a meaning close to Daniel's heart: LAG — the letters of G.A.L spelled backwards.
It's a reminder that giving back is woven into the very identity of this company — not an afterthought, but a foundation. Every shirt the team wears carries Matthew 7, the passage about building on the rock.
For G.A.L Building Group, that rock is Christ. The company's heart, its work, and its giving are all built on that foundation.
